Fireworks
always fascinated me as a child; I associated them to those hi-tech looking
Apollo rockets that carried astronauts to space and choreographed Hollywood "space battles" and "war" movies as I saw them on TV during the
Seventies. New Year’s eve always bring back wholesome memories of years
past... my late Father is a loyal patron of celebrating the New Year with a
bang! Up to his twilight years and despite having to put up with his full
grown son’s over extended childish delinquency among other things all throughout the old
year; comes new year season he will never miss earnestly conferring to
me on what pyrothecnics to prepare for the strike of midnight. We spend modestly
on this dangerous party implement just enough for us to participate in five to
eight minutes of flaming revelry, my father always make sure that there are at
least few pieces of this candy wrapped finger annihilators specially the
“airborne fireworks” in line with the toy trumpets, kitchen pans, horns etc …
to make some more harmless follow up noises. The acrid smell and smoke
that fill the air will mix with the aroma of the barbecue, spaghetti, salad and
other sumptuous stomach goodies my mother had prepared for the family
celebration, but I don’t seemed to mind, for me back then we were just being
obedient to a merry tradition that completes the 365 days renewing social cycle
of the life that we know of.
The
crude videos I featured on this post was randomly taken on the new years eve to
welcome January one of “2016” around my neighborhood to test my cellphone
camera, although upon legal adulthood I already developed a fear in handling
firecrackers especially those which have the explosive power of a small
dynamite locally slanged with catchy names like “Grand slam”, “baby
dynamite”, “Super Bawang””and its derivatives, I still find it quite
entertaining to watch them specially sky displays. As a minor when my parents were still alive both would always reminds me of the dangers of directly playing
with “pyrothenics” … but “boys will be boys” so I will still manage to
light up a few of those limb burster which proliferated in season on the
streets and among people in the neighborhood, looking at it now funnily remind me
of how precariously we handled pyrotechnics as a boy and quite thankful that I
have reach my late “fourty-ish” age with all the fingers still in my hands... and feet.
Even though playing with recreational explosives somehow rekindle many enjoyable memories of the holidays past, I do favor the campaign to regulate their use specially with regards on it accessibility by children, public fireworks shows is one subtle alternative to discourage erroneous use by the general public, but they should be well planned and staged by responsible organizers.
The
voices reacting to the fireworks in the background of the featured video are my
“nieces”, their shouts makes me think about those pre-historic man when they
first discovered and saw “fire”; lol! although I think their yell
is silly over reaction to the “merry chaos” that is happening at that midnight,
the truth is, something deep inside me miss and envy their seemingly
instinctive enthusiasm which I had when I was their age, wherein what is
already mundane events for most people, is still viewed as an exciting
new experience.
Safer alternative?
